La Critique Glauque #179 : V/H/S/85 (2023) – La chute de la saga ?

Well, it’s already February, and I still haven’t released a single gloomy review! You realize ? And for good reason ; regarding the releases at the start of the year, I have no Nothing seen yet that makes me want to write a video… And yes, sorry, Night Swim,

It’s platitude personified, there’s no point wasting our time talking about it! As a result, I turned to a few films from last year that I had too many little discussed, and the grand finale of these options saw Vermin,

By Sebastien Vanicek, which quite a few subscribers have been asking for since its release, an opus of a saga of which I treat all the episodes each year, a little bit like a sort of tradition, and of which

I had a little snubbed the last feature film… It was high time to repair this injustice, and to strike a blow for the first grim review of the year. Good evening, friends horror, and welcome to this new grim review, dedicated to V/H/S/85!

V/H/S/85 is therefore the sixth episode of the franchise, and is still a sketch film, like each of his predecessors. For those who have never heard of it, if ever there is one, it is an anthological saga, which offers segments

Short horror films which allegedly come from real VHS tapes, and whose form is designed to make us believe their authenticity, at least for the duration of our viewing. With time, excellent directors participated in this adventure, or were even revealed by episodes

Of the series, and this latest opus, released in 2023 on the American platform Shudder, will not make me lie about this; we find there David Bruckner, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, Mike P. Nelson and even… Scott Derrickson! A hell of a cast of filmmakers for a film

Sketches, like the VHS saga has been offering us for several years now! And before tell you more about each segment… This video is sponsored by MyHeritage! MyHeritage is a platform that allows you to build your family tree. It’s super

Easy to use, and very complete; starting from your parents, you build it little by little opening new branches thanks to suggested family connections. The tool also includes more than 19 billion historical documents that will help you discover your family history, and even internationally! Because yes, in fact, tracing your family tree

Is an often tedious, sometimes impossible process, but that’s where MyHeritage comes in. which helps you and offers you concrete leads thanks to its database. For my part, I give him a hard time with my family tree, and a sadly missing and unknown grandfather, born in Canada; but that’s where

The research becomes fascinating! You can then start exploring lots of historical documents and the countless identities recorded by MyHeritage, trying to make links, carry out a real investigation through all the avenues offered by the platform. For example, it allowed me to find one of my direct ancestors, a certain Benoit-Joseph,

Who would have been a Typographer in the 1800s in Brussels, a then fascinating profession; they were very often literate and educated workers, at the origin of numerous movements social because their work allowed them to spread their ideas more easily. Brief,

The information I am confronted with is fascinating, and has given me a different vision of my origins and the circumstances that led me to be born, and to speak to you today about horror cinema, in addition to allowing me to question myself, to question my origins,

To question what I took for granted! Basically, I learn more about myself by taking a little trip back in time… Moreover, with MyHeritage, you can even colorize and animate your old family photos, for an impressive result, which made my grandmother particularly funny. If you want to have the same experience and

Trace your family tree, and thus learn more about you and perhaps realize that you are related by blood to Christopher Lee, Wes Craven or even… Uwe Boll… Click on the link in the description, which will give you access to a trial 14 days free premium subscription! Thank you MyHeritage for sponsoring the

Video, perfect when we talk about the sixth episode of a wise man, with the question of inheritance, of the succession, all that… Far-fetched, you say? Brief ! Let’s enter get to the heart of the matter, and let me tell you about each segment of V/H/S/85!

Let’s start with the common thread of this new episode; you know it if you know the saga, but in general, each VHS film has a segment which acts as a common thread and therefore, link between the other sketches. But recently, this tradition is over,

And the famous red thread is just a segment like all the others, just spread over the entire film and divided into several parts, and without any particular function. This time it is from Total Copy by David Bruckner, director of the latest Hellraiser to date, which makes us

Follow a mockumentary focusing on a shapeshifting creature, studied by scientists. The idea is interesting, there’s a sort of X-Files atmosphere, or Stranger Things for those who like it. young, but darker, obviously. But ultimately, the segment is unfortunately pretty forgettable; the fact that it is sectioned in this way prevents the atmosphere from really

Settle down, since each time the mood starts to pick up, we move on to another sketch, and all efforts to try to understand the mystery then shatter. Then you have to admit that not much happens in this segment, during which we only

Teaser the dramatic and horrible fall that will occur during its very last part, necessarily. And certainly, the finale is terrifying, and quite gory! But during the other parts, we don’t have much to eat. Again, this wouldn’t have been a problem if the segment hadn’t been split into

Several games, because this slow pace would only have favored the setting in place of an atmosphere and reinforced the impression of authenticity… But the choice to make it red thread ruins this sketch a little, in my opinion… Especially since once again, as

That common thread, it just doesn’t add anything… Then, we have the first “real” segment, in quotes, No Wake, by Mike P. Nelson, director of Mortal Detour: The Foundation, the reboot of the saga that I didn’t like very much, by the way. In this sketch,

We follow seven young people who go in a mobile home to a lake lost in the middle of the wood to have a great weekend. Only here, while part of the group is having fun

Boat in the lake, they are shot down one by one by a sniper… But the water of the lake, swimming in which was also prohibited, seems to have unknown properties… The segment isn’t bad, even if it’s a bit like a typical found footage survival.

Young imbeciles, a camera, flirting, heavy jokes, the cocktail of teen movies usual American horror stories, but it must be said that everything holds up quite well. There scene of the gunshots is impressive, even shocking, especially since it happens without warning, and the fantastic twist is interesting; not that it’s terrifying,

That’s not its function at all, it’s rather mysterious and intriguing, but that’s what it implies which creates a kind of tension… And will serve as a cliffhanger, because yes, this segment has a sequel, also directed by Mike P. Nelson, which I’ll tell you about in a few minutes.

Next we play one of my favorite sketches from the film; God of Death promising Mexican filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero, who you may know from the anthologies Mexico Barbaro or Satanic Hispanics, or even Bingo Hell. This segment therefore takes place in Mexico, in the middle of recording a television mission, until an earthquake

Occurs, and kills the star presenter on the spot… The rare survivors will be taken in charge by rescuers, and they will try together to leave the building, still at risk, under the influence of tremors or other earthquakes… But what is happening outside? Well they

Will end up realizing that the catastrophe is in fact nothing natural, and that forces very ancient, obscure and terrifying, very Mexican, are in fact at work. This is among other things why I like the segment; I admit that I like the imagery

Mexican horror, and in particular everything related to Aztec mythology! And Gigi Saul Guerrero makes a point of using it in his work, which is a good thing in my opinion, especially since it’s not something common, even in Mexico! Then yes, even evil Aztec entities fucking up in Mexico time

Of a segment of V/H/S, for me, it’s validated! The little problem I have is that the segment is very, very long, and slow; once again, it is to be able to set an atmosphere effectively, but for a V/H/S sketch, it’s a little disappointing… Then the disaster side is a little

A little too light to keep us in suspense during the first part, which, as you will have understood, is the one that I find too long. Then it still looks a lot like a short version of Jeruzalem by the Paz brothers, a found footage set in the famous city that

Finds herself invaded by Demons on the day of the apocalypse… Replace the demons Judeo Christians by evil Aztec deities, and we obtain a result quite similar, but as a short film. Rest assured, the segment has its share significant moments despite everything, and some fairly gory shots,

Made more macabre by the deliberately poor quality of the image. Overall a success, but a pace that could have been better managed. The next segment is called “TKNOGD”, understand Technogod, by Natasha Kermani, the director of the film Lucky. He makes us follow Ada Lovelace,

A performance artist who asserts, on stage in front of a few spectators, that God is dead, killed by technology, which serves as a modern divinity. She then puts on a virtual reality headset, which allows her to evolve in a digital world,

While the public can follow his adventures in this universe via a screen. Everything will happen very good, until she comes across a very hostile monstrous creature, which will attack her in the virtual world. But as you certainly suspect, this attack will have repercussions

In real life, and Ada will just be massacred in front of her helpless spectators. An interesting idea, and for once, the first truly original one in the saga; finally a segment with an innovative concept! Especially since, and rest assured, I will not talk about it

Not in detail here, the segment ends with a rather interesting kind of twist, and that Kermani, and its screenwriter Zoé Cooper, have the intelligence not to explain in a heavy manner. This short film has a rather strange atmosphere, which is reminiscent of that of Cigarette Burns from

Carpenter, for example, despite a completely different subject; these stories of secret societies, or obscure cult, whose object of interest could have dramatic consequences if it were known to the general public, but is kept secret by an elite of whom we do not even know

Not existence… Well, I like it. After, to be honest, the first time I saw it, I missed its atmosphere a little; it was definitely the segment that I liked it the least, I found it… Empty, aesthetically flawed, and his speech didn’t

Didn’t have any more impact on me than that. As it turns out, it needed a second viewing so that I can fully grasp its essence. The next segment is the second part of No Wake by Mike P. Nelson, always produced by the man; Ambrosia. This time we

We focus on an old American family with strange traditions to say the least; to mark the transition to adulthood, its members must kill seven people. They are great gun enthusiasts. fire, with codes reminiscent of those of secret societies, a vibe a little bit like the Society of

Brian Yuzna… And, I’ll give it to you, it’s of course them, and more precisely the 15-year-old girl whose rite of passage is at the origin of the massacre young people from the first segment of Nelson. And really, why not? The segment takes place

In the kind of manor in which this rich family with very ancient origins lives. A beautiful and large American clan, guarantor of its purity, proud of their country, defender of the values of Donald Trump. The speech behind this second part is

Quite clear, even a little too hammered, but again, why not? It is quite original. Simply, for a segment of the VHS saga, it remains quite weak. it doesn’t tell not much, and yet, it is very long, and this is its quality following on from the first segment

Which gives it value, weight. But suddenly, you have to take the two sketches as a whole to be able to judge them, and the result is final; it’s way too long. Both start with an interesting idea, but don’t go any further than their basic concept,

Do not develop it in any way, and need about 40 minutes to tell their story, yet very simplistic. Basically, the more I rewatch the film, the more this double segment disappoints me… In addition, because of it, this V/H/S is one of the longest in the

Franchise, almost two hours! Anyway… And finally, we have Dreamkill by Scott Derrickson himself, one of the most anticipated segments of this new opus, since the announcement of the participation of the filmmaker. Well, you know if you follow the

Channel for a while, but I don’t appreciate Derrickson’s cinema that much… The fact remains that I was curious, like everyone! It begins with the murder of a young woman at her home, filmed from the killer’s point of view; then, the police inspector who goes

On site says that he anonymously received a video tape a week earlier, which had shown this murder there. The investigation follows, which will lead him to a gothic high school student with apparently premonitory dreams and his father. Since it’s an investigation, it’s a bit difficult

To tell you more about it without revealing too much, and I refuse to suffer the wrath of the defenders spoilers in the comments, I refuse it! Still, it didn’t fail; I have been very disappointed with the segment. It is certainly the most ambitious of this V/H/S 85,

It is rather complex, aims to be original, offers several different points of view, and in terms of staging, he goes to great lengths, but for me, it’s counterproductive; strength of offer different camera angles, we end up not respecting the basic concept of the saga

V/H/S; even if, it must be honest, each of the points of view proposed is justified by the concept by Derrickson. Simply, it becomes over-cut, the editing is much too laborious for us to be able to

Fully believe in the authenticity of the images that are offered to us, and yet it is on this idea that the entire franchise is based on! If we add to this the fact that this segment is very “Derrickson” eh, the shadow of Sinister and Black Phone hangs over him a little,

We’re not at all disoriented… He tries things, it’s ambitious, once again, but I find that it didn’t come to fruition, and that, ultimately, in terms of plot… It’s very flat. And that perfectly sums up this sixth episode of V/H/S; it is as flat as possible,

And it is ultimately one of those that I like the least, even though it offered one of the biggest director castings in the entire franchise! Perhaps these two statements are related, that I personally had too many expectations and curiosity, but honestly,

I do not think so ; the fact that I have seen it several times helps to reduce my initial biases, and if I actually re-watched the film after watching it, it still doesn’t fly very high.

The absence of a common thread bothers me a lot, because it was often these segments which reinforced the mythological side of the saga, which helped to forge a united lore, to constitute a true universe with V/H/S films, and there, it’s ultimately just a completely banal found footage sketch film,

Without this little extra identity that the saga has always had. Well, the worst part is undoubtedly this V/H/S 85 does not have any real good segment, there is none that manages to carry the whole film… Even if aside from that, there isn’t any really bad or failed one either. No,

Everything is quite average, quite flat, and to be honest, I prefer the less regular episodes, with no more gap in quality between the short films, but which offers real dazzling moments, sketches impressive enough to make us forget those who are frankly stupid. Otherwise,

Overall, this V/H/S85 is rather gory, offers some striking images and violence which is a pleasure, our directors gave it their all, and for me, that always makes me possible. In conclusion, V/H/S85 is far from being the best of the saga, and even

If it’s probably not the worst objectively, it’s one of my least favorite… Maybe even the one I like the least, because it lacks potato, madness, and real moments of terror… He’s too nice, too calm, too… Flat. Definitely the word of the video.

And there you have it, it’s already the end of this first gloomy review of the year, and I hope that it you will like it. Thanks again to MyHeritage for sponsoring the video, don’t forget that you find all links in the description to benefit from a free 14-day trial

Merci
