アル・パチーノとロバート・デ・ニーロの2大アカデミー賞俳優共演で話題を呼んだ『ヒート』が日本公開されてから今年で30年。初公開時に飛びぬけた大ヒットを記録したわけではないし、映画賞受賞の勲章もない。にもかかわらず、このクライムアクションは現在も語り継がれ、後の作品に多大な影響をあたえながら熱狂的なファンベースを築いてきた。この映画は、なぜ愛されるのか？ 記念の年を機に、改めて『ヒート』について振り返ってみよう。
1989年のＴＶ用映画「メイド・イン・Ｌ.Ａ.」を同作のマイケル・マン監督がセルフリメイク。いつでも30秒フラットで高飛びできるよう面倒なかかわりを避ける頭脳派の犯罪チームの首領ニール（デ・ニーロ）と、容疑者に食らいついたらとことん追い詰める市警の鬼刑事ヴィンセント（パチーノ）の息詰まる攻防が170分にわたって繰り広げられる。先述のふたり以外にも、オスカー俳優のジョン・ヴォイトや、後にオスカーを射止めるナタリー・ポートマン、さらにヴァル・キルマー、トム・サイズモア、アシュリー・ジャッド、ダニー・トレホなどなど、とにかく豪華キャスト。これだけでも映画ファンには強烈な吸引力だ。
そしてやはり、中身に何よりの魅力がある。まず、刑事ヴィンセントと犯罪者ニールという二項対立のドラマ構造。単なる善玉と悪玉ではなく、両者を筋金入りのプロフェッショナルとして描きながら攻防を演じさせ、高密度のスリルを醸し出している点が素晴らしい。同時に物語は、彼らふたりの鏡像のような関係を強調。ヴィンセントは家庭を壊してまでプロであろうとし、ニールは家庭を持たずにプロに徹する。生き方は異なるが、コインの裏表のような似た者同士。この構図の美しさも見逃せない。
本作を語るとき、必ずと言ってよいほど話題に上るのが、そんな両者がレストランで向かい合う6分強の対面シーン。駆け引きのような会話に始まり、宣戦布告のように終わるこの場面はとにかく緊張感にあふれており、引き込まれる。言葉と間だけで、両者の職業観、さらには哲学が静かにぶつかり合う。パチーノとデ・ニーロが同じフレームの中に収まっているシーンは本作では、ごくわずか。それだけに、劇中の磁場としても強烈なものがある。
ロサンゼルスという街そのものがキャラクターとして成立している
リアリティが重視され、俳優たちは実戦的な射撃訓練も受けた

この場面もそうだが、マン監督は音楽を鳴らすような大げさな盛り上げを避け、リアリティ重視で物語を組み立てる。同じく語り草となっている、市街地での銃撃戦の場面も同様だ。俳優たちに実戦的な射撃訓練を受けさせてその動きをとらえ、銃撃音は建物への反響を計算しながら同時録音。なおかつ、広角レンズを使用して街を雰囲気ごととらえるのだから、特異な臨場感が生じるのも必然だ。街の雰囲気という点では、夜のLAをとらえた青みがかった描写も印象度が強く、ロサンゼルスという街そのものがキャラクターとして成立しているような感さえ抱かせる。
こんな具合に、『ヒート』は一度観たら強烈に焼き付く作品。それゆえに、他の映画監督にも多大な影響をあたえてきた。その代表格はクリストファー・ノーラン。パチーノを主演に迎えた『インソムニア』（02）や、『プレステージ』（06）では二項対立のドラマ性を引用したと言われており、『ダークナイト』（08）ではそれに加え、街中でのリアルなアクション描写でもオマージュを捧げている。ちなみにノーランはマン監督や出演者を招いた、全米監督協会主催の『ヒート』の製作20周年トークショーで司会を務めたほどのファン。その模様はYouTubeにもアップされているので、興味のある方はチェックしてみて欲しい。
他にもマーティン・スコセッシは90年代のベストテンに挙げ、ジョー・カーナハンは『NARC ナーク』（02）でリアリズムを踏襲。ベン・アフレックは監督第2作の『ザ・タウン』（10）でオマージュを捧げ、エドガー・ライトは自作『ベイビー・ドライバー』（17）に影響を与えた作品のひとつとして公言するなど、挙げるとキリがない。はっきりしているのは、『ヒート』が都市型犯罪映画の揺るぎない模範となったこと。端正にしてパワフルなこのマスターピースは、まさしく映画ファンの必見作なのだ。
