who has warrants for their arrest due to their association with Captain Jack Sparrow Becket seeks the legendary Pirates Compass which has the mystical ability to point towards whatever the holder desires most this Compass becomes Central to the film’s sprawling and multi-layered plot one of the core story lines follows Captain Jack SP ‘s desperate attempt to escape a blood debt to the Fearsome Davey Jones Bill Nai the Monstrous captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman Jones with his tentacle faed Visage and his crew of sea creature-like Sailors represents one of the most visually striking elements of the film the special effects work particularly on Jones and his crew is groundbreaking and still holds up remarkably well the character of Davey Jones with his tragic backstory and menacing presence adds depth and and gravitas to the film as Jack scrambles to find a way out of his predicament he learns of the existence of the titular Dead Man’s Chest which holds the still beating heart of Davy Jones whoever possesses the heart can command Jones and the Seas this discovery sets off a frenetic race between various factions each with their own motives for obtaining the chest W Turner seeks it to free his father bootstrap Bill Turner stellen scars guard who is enslaved on the flying judgment Elizabeth determined and resourceful as ever joins the quest partly out of loyalty to Will and partly due to her own burgeoning sense of adventure and Duty the interplay between these characters is one of the film’s greatest strengths Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow Remains the centerpiece his eccentric unpredictable and often hilarious Antics provide much of the film’s charm Depp’s ability to balance humor with moments of genuine emotion and fear makes
